Five centuries of culture
The interests of those who owned the Palazzo went beyond the fine arts. In 1561, Jacopo Corsi commissioned musician, Jacopo Peri, and poet, Ottavio Rinuccini, to write and perform what was to become the world’s first opera. Dafne was performed for a private audience in the Palazzo’s Sala delle Muse for noblemen, ‘foreigners’, and even the Grand Duke Ferdinando I.
Often referred to as the “Albergo delle Muse” (hotel of the muses), the Palazzo was a favorite meeting point for many of the greatest poets and musicians through history, including Monteverdi, Tasso, Rinuccini, Marino and Galileo.
